The Pillars of Islam

Abu Abdur Rahman Abdulah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattaab (radi Allahu anhu) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) saying: “Islam has been founded on five (pillars): To testify that none has the right to be worshipped in truth except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, to establish the prayer, to pay the Zakat, to make the pilgrimage (Hajj) to the House (i.e. the Ka’bah in Makkah), and to fast in Ramadan.

[Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Commentary:

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) explains in this hadith that Islam is in the same standing as a building that shades and protects its owner from the inside and outside. The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) explained that Islam is founded on five (pillars):

  1. To testify that none has the right to be worshipped in truth except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
  2. To establish the prayer
  3. To pay the Zakat
  4. To make the pilgrimage (Hajj) to the House (i.e. the Ka’hah in Makkah)
  5. To fast in Ramadan

And Allah Knows Best!
