Seeking Forgiveness for your Parents
The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “Verily the rank of man is elevated in the Paradise. He will ask, ‘How can this be?’ He will be told, ‘ ‘(It is due to) your child asking forgiveness for you.’”
[Silsilah al-Saheehah (1598)]
The man is asking ‘How can this be?’ in other words what has caused my level or degree to be raised in the Paradise.
He will be told, ”It is due to your child asking forgiveness for you.” This shows that even the deceased mother or father can benefit and have their level raised by their children seeking forgiveness for them and making du’aa’ for them (as we mentioned in the previous ahadith).
This Hadith also encourages us to be dutiful to our parents even after they have passed away by seeking forgiveness for them, making du’aa’ for them and similar actions (such as giving charity on their behalf).
This Hadith also teaches us that we need to bring up our children according to the pure Islamic teachings (eg. obedience to parents) so that they may benefit us (i.e their parents) in this life and in the next life.
And Allah knows best!
