Good Manners

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “The most perfect believer in respect of faith is he who is best of them in manners.”

[Sunan Abu Dawood]

Commentary:

The above Hadith informs us that the most perfect believers in respect to their Eemaan (faith) are the ones with the best of manners. Therefore possessing good manners is a true indication of someone being a true believer.

The Muslims example in having good manners is that of the Prophet Muhammad (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) who had the best manners and was sent to perfect good manners as he (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said:  “I have only been sent to perfect righteous behaviour.” (Musnad Ahmad)

The Qur’an and Sunnah indicate the good manners which the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) possessed. Such examples are as follows:

1. Allah praised the Prophet’s (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) manners in the Qur’an by saying (interpretation of the meaning):

“And verily, you (O Muhammad) are on an exalted standard of character.” (Al-Qalam, 68: 4)

2. Sa’d bin Hisham asked Aisha (radi Allahu anha) about the character of the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), so she replied: ‘Have you not read the Qur’an?’ Sa’d said: ‘Of course.’ Then she (Aisha) said: ‘Verily the character of the Messenger of Allah  was the Qur’an. (Sahih Muslim)

This means that he would act according to the commands and the prohibition in the Qur’an. His nature and character were patterned according to the Qur’an and he abandoned his natural disposition (i.e., the carnal nature).

3. Al-Bara’ (radi Allahu anhu) said: “The Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) had the most handsome face of all the people, and he had the best behaviour of all the people. And he was not tall, nor was he short”  (Sahih Al-Bukhari)

4. Anas (radi Allahu anhu) said: “I served the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) for ten years, and he never said a word of displeasure to me (uff), nor did he ever say to me concerning something I had done, ‘Why did you do that?’ And he never said to me concerning something I had not done, ‘Why didn’t you do this?’ He had the best character, and I never touched any silk or anything else that was softer than the palm of the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam). And I never smelt any musk or perfume that had a better fragrance than the sweat of the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam). (Sahih Muslim)

And Allah knows best!
