The Virtues of the Month of Sha’baan

Usaamah ibn Zayd (radi Allahu anhu) said: “I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I do not see you fasting in any month more than in Sha’baan.’ He (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, ‘That is a month concerning which many people are heedless, between Rajab and Ramadan. It is the month in which people’s deeds are taken up to the Lord of the Worlds, and I would like my deeds to be taken up whilst I am fasting.’”

[Sunan al-Nasaa’i - Classed as Sahih by Ibn Khuzaymah and Classed as Hasan by al-Albaani]

Commentary:

Praise be to Allah!

If one is asked, what is the reason that the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) used to fast a great deal during the month of Sha’baan? (as we discussed in yesterdays Hadith)

The above Hadith of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) answers this question, in which we can derive the following two reasons:

  1. The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “That is a month (i.e Sha’baan) concerning which many people are heedless, between Rajab (one of sacred months) and Ramadan (the month of fasting).”
  2. He (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) also said, “It is the month (i.e Sha’baan) in which people’s deeds are taken up to the Lord of the Worlds, and I would like my deeds to be taken up whilst I am fasting.”

Regarding the raising and presentation of a person’s deeds, another narration mentions that the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said about his fasting on Mondays and Thursdays, “Those are two days in which deeds are shown to the Lord of the worlds, and I like my deeds to be shown (to Him) when I am fasting.” [Sunan al-Nasaa’i - Hadith Hasan Sahih]

Some of the Scholars (may Allah have mercy upon them) have concluded after mentioning the above ahadith and many others that daily deeds are raised and presented to Allah daily (as per the Hadith in Sahih Al-Bukhari and Muslim), the weekly deeds are raised and presented to Allah on Mondays and Thursdays (as per the above mentioned Hadith) and the yearly deeds are raised and presented to Allah during the month of Sha’baan (as per the main Hadith in discussion).

And Allah knows best!
