Branches of Eman

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “Eman has over seventy odd branches, the uppermost most being the declaration of La ilaha illallah (that is there no god worthy of worship except Allah); and the least being the removal of a harmful object from the road (path) and modesty (al-haya) is a branch of eman.”

[Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Commentary:

The above Hadith illustrates that Eman includes beliefs, sayings and actions:

  • Saying La ilaha illallah is a saying of the tongue.
  • Removing a harmful thing from the road is an action of the physical limbs.
  • Modesty (al-haya) is an action of the heart.

This Hadith also shows the importance and excellence of possessing modesty (al-haya) because it induces a person to perform good deeds and deter him from performing evil.

And Allah knows best!
