Exposing marital secrets

The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) said, “From the most evil of the people to Allah on the Day of Resurrection will be the man who consorts (has sexual relations) with his wife and then publicises her secret.”

[Sahih Muslim]

We benefit from the above Hadith that it is obligatory for both spouses to keep the secrets of the marriage, especially anything that has to do with their intimate relationship in bed.  The wife is entrusted with the husband’s secrets and the husband is entrusted with the wife’s secrets.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (radi Allahu anhu) that the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) turned to the men and said, “Is there any man among you who, when he comes to his wife, he locks the door, throws his blanket over himself and conceals himself with the cover of Allah?” They said, “Yes.” He said, “And does he sit after that and say, ‘I did such and such, and I did such and such?’” They remained silent. Then he turned to the women and said, “Is there anyone among you who speaks (of private marital matters)?” They remained silent. Then a buxom young girl sat up tall so that the Messenger of Allah (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) would see her and hear her words, and said, “O Messenger of Allah, (the men) speak and (the women) speak.” He said, “Do you know what the likeness of that is? The likeness of that is that of a female devil who meets a male devil in the street and he fulfils his desire with her when the people are looking on.” [Sunan Abu Dawood, 2174. Classed as Sahih by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 7037]

Islam treats marital union as a sacred and secret act, both in social and moral terms.

Indeed, the sanctity of marital rights contributes to the consolidation of moral norms and social cohesion. Yet, what passes between wife and husband on the consummation night (i.e. sexual relations) is usually taken in a light vein in today’s society. In the morning, both of them relate their sexual experience to their friends respectively. This is moral indecency which is incompatible with human dignity and civilised behavior. This Hadith proves that it is a grave sin which must be avoided. The sexual relations that occur between husband and wife must be kept private and must not be discussed publicly.

And Allah knows best!
