The Prophets (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) prayer during the night

Aishah (radi Allahu anha) said, The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) used to offer eleven Rak’ah of optional Salat (prayers) in the latter part of the night. When it was about dawn, he would offer two short Rak’ah and then would lie down on his right side till the Mu’adhdhin (one who calls for prayer) would come to inform him that the congregation had gathered (for prayer).

[Sahih Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Commentary:

This Hadith throws light on the Prophet’s night prayers (Tahajjud). This Hadith further tells us that the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) would perform two Rak’ah (units) of Sunnah (after the Adhan of the Fajr prayer) and then lie down on his right side until the Mu’adhdhin arrives.

This Hadith also sheds light on how the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) would spend his night in regards to when he would sleep and when he would be awake for prayer.

And Allah knows best!
